The Two Kinds of Intelligence – And Why We Need Both?

There’s a race on in the staffing world right now, and very few are questioning it.

“Everyone else is adopting AI, so we’d better keep up.”

Every firm in your market is talking about it. Every conference has multiple sessions about it, and every vendor (including some marketing agencies) has a tool for it. When the entire industry is sprinting in one direction, standing still seems like falling behind. So, firms are buying, automating, and racing to stay ahead, even though they have no idea what they are racing toward.

Here’s the simple truth:

Staffing is a people business.
It always has been.
It always will be.

In the rush to become a technology business, many staffing firms are quickly forgetting the thing that made them good in the first place.

AI can process the market.
It can’t read the room.

Artificial intelligence is genuinely powerful at what it does, like parsing resumes, matching keywords to open orders, drafting outreach messages, and scheduling calls. But notice what all of that is.

Volume.
Speed.
Repetition.

None of it is the part of staffing that actually generates revenue. That part runs on the other kind of intelligence – emotional intelligence. The problem isn’t that staffing firms are adopting AI. Used correctly, it’s a gift, giving teams more time for the human work that makes the difference.

Staffing firms are chasing technology as if it were the strategy and letting the human craft atrophy while they do it. They automate the outreach and wonder why candidates ghost them. They optimize the machine and neglect the person.

And in today’s unpredictable market, that’s completely backwards. Fewer orders mean higher stakes on every single placement. Anxious candidates mean more moments that rely on trust. The firms that will win in any economy aren’t the ones with the most impressive technology. They are the ones whose staffing teams know how to create relationships.

So, adopt the technology. I’m all for that. But don’t let the race to get there make you forget the business you’re actually in. Staffing isn’t a technology business that just happens to involve people. It’s a people business that can be sharpened by technology. Get that order wrong and no tool, no matter how impressive, will save you.

Get it right, and you will pull away from every staffing firm that mistakenly thought the technology was the end game.
