The Agency That Became a Software Company

Watch what your marketing partner is actually selling you these days. Look closely, and a pattern emerges across staffing marketing right now.

Some of the biggest names in this space aren’t selling marketing anymore.

They’re selling software.

Platforms. Licenses. Subscription tiers. Annual contracts. The language of SaaS has quietly replaced the language of real agency work, and many staffing owners/executives haven’t noticed because the logo on the email didn’t change.

But the business model did. And when the business model changes, what you receive as a client changes as well, whether anyone says so out loud or not.

I understand the appeal of that pivot for the agencies making it. Software scales in ways that true agency work never will. Support becomes a ticket queue instead of a discussion. Margins improve. And “the platform must have done it” is a comfortable place to stand when a client’s results come up short.

Yes, it’s a great move. For them.

What it isn’t, however, is a marketing service. It’s a software product with marketing language wrapped around it.

We have made a different choice, and I want to be crystal clear about it.

TerraFirma is a marketing agency for staffing firms. That’s what we are, and that’s the only thing we are.

Do we use AI? Of course we do. It’s a sharp tool, and we’d be foolish and out of step not to leverage it where appropriate. But it’s the chisel and not the sculptor.

The strategy, judgment, and point of view?
The accountability partner?
The human who actually knows your business?

That all stays with us, because that’s the part that delivers value.

If you increasingly log in online instead of talking to a person, that’s a sign. If it starts feeling more like a SaaS subscription, that’s a sign. If the answer to “why isn’t this working?” is an upgrade, that’s a sign.

I guess none of those things are wrong, but they just aren’t a marketing agency.

There’s a difference between a firm that uses AI appropriately and one that became an AI product.

Make sure you know which one you have as a partner.
